about

Our Tadpole Series cassette releases are supposed to be where artists experiment, play around, try things out and generally push themselves out of their comfort zone in ways you would probably never see with a full album release.

It's sort of a collection of sketchbooks and ideas from the artists we like, basically, so will be a bit more all over the place than the general output of the label itself (which is bad enough for that already). Consequently, we're not expecting blanket coverage or global domination, more just some response from the kind of people into either the freer artistic process we're trying to encourage or the possibly very niche music we end up releasing on the Tadpole Series.

In this case, the music is insomniac rock, I suppose. Recorded in a Glasgow bedroom between 9pm and 5am, deliberately trying to make the guitar playing as weird as possible. The funny thing is, from the David Cameron's Eton Mess compilation Youngstrr Joey seemed to be one of the bands who veered closest to straight up, hummable as hell indie rock songs, so there's an enjoyable irony to the fact that our first release with the band is as off-kilter and messy as this.

Cal plays bass in a few of the bands on Eton Mess actually, although it keeps changing so it can be a bit of a challenge to keep track of - Passion Pusher and Spinning Coin for sure, and he trades guitar, bass, drums and singing duties with Eilidh and Simone in Breakfast Muff.

But Youngstrr Joey is his own vehicle, and when he's not recording deliberately obtuse stuff at three in the morning I reckon he writes some cracking pop songs, which might become a little more obvious on subsequent releases!
