about

Because the world had a collective idiot spasm in 2016 and elected all sorts of lunatics to run our countries (yeah yeah Canada, piss off) loads of crucial work is being undermined in a wide variety of areas, and we feel it is our duty to help address this.

Consequently all revenue (not just all profit) from this release will be going to charities which protect the NHS, support migrants, refugees, victims of rape and domestic abuse, and those who suffer physical or mental disabilities - you know, the work our governments should be doing, if they weren't a bunch of total wankers.

Mrs. Toad and I will match your contribution (unless you go crazy and donate loads and loads in which case we'll add as much as we can) so please give generously and thank you so much for your support.

Yippee Kay Yule comprises two songs inspired by the Greatest Christmas Story Ever Told ™, which is of course Die Hard. It will be released on the 5th December on Song, by Toad Records as a tiny snow globe Christmas tree bauble containing Lego John McClane.

I heard Bart from eagleowl play Let's Save Christmas at the Christmas Songwriters show a couple of years ago, and I've been quietly waiting my moment to persuade him to record it ever since. The thing with eagleowl is that they cannot be rushed, but once that magnificent ginger beard grew back and the internet antics crept back into the category of 'borderline deranged' I knew that now was the time to strike.

And so it proved. A bit like the song itself, what was started out as just guitar and vocals with maybe a bit of double bass added just kept on rolling, and growing larger and grander by the minute. We've now got the steady addition of synths, a piano and all sorts, leading to a cacophonously joyous crescendo of festive spirit featuring a child choir, sleigh bells (of course) and track after track of wonky, glorious vocals. It truly is a Christmas miracle.

And, as luck would have it, as soon as Jonnie Common (he of the wondrous Terminator-themed ballad 'I'll Be Back' - check YouTube) heard about this ridiculous project he announced that he too had always wanted to write a Die Hard Christmas song and, erm, well how could I possibly say anything other than 'fucking hell, yes of course!' And so we have the counterpoint: one song from the perspective of the Nakatomi Plaza building itself and now one from the perspective of festive everyman-hero John McClane: "heavy handed, strong and silent, saviour in a plain white vest".

What is it that makes these two songs so glorious? Well they're played absolutely straight. There's no ironic indie Christmas nonsense here, just two absolutely fantastic, joyously silly servings of pure Christmas magic which are bound to become worldwide instant classics if there's any justice in the world whatsoever. Which, if 2016 has taught us anything... oh, wait.
