about

Released on digital and vinyl on Valentine's Day 2020.

Fair Mothers: “We got the core of all those songs in just the one afternoon on my accoustic, but it was cold that Spring and I kept gravitating over to this squeaky old black piano next to the stove, which relaxed me and all these new melodies began to come out. I went back home to Stonehaven, happy that I’d gotten the songs out of my system, and fired up by these new melodies. They kept turning into new songs that we kept on recording whenever and however we could. And it’s grown into this fantastic big project, involving some really wonderful musicians.”

And, yes, this is a new album on Song, by Toad Records, despite me having retired from music and shut the label down almost a year and a half ago now. Well, this recording project started before then, and has taken some time to get finished.

About two years ago, when Dana Gavanski came over to record for Split 12” Vol.7 she played on a bill celebrating Fox Food Records, who released her first demos EP. Fair Mothers were on that bill too, and she and Kevin ended up singing this song together in soundcheck. Before Dana left, we recorded Rainfall, Canada and another song in The Happiness Hotel, because it sounded so good. Then two years of work, one retirement, one ex-record label, twenty-three songs, and contributions from Pete Harvey (cello), Esther Swift (harp), Faith Eliott (vocals), Pete McConville (harmonica), Sam Mallalieu (drums) and Johnny ‘Pictish Trail’ Lynch (yelling) later and we have two albums, related but not joined, and one truly epic, gorgeous project of which I am immensely proud.

I recorded and mixed these songs myself, and in most cases was heavily involved in the arrangement too, so I guess that makes me a producer now. Better than a record label owner anyway, all they get to do all day is admin.
